SHARK STANLEY AND FRIENDS
Please help us support Shark Defenders' Shark Stanley and Friends campaign http://www.sharkdefenders.com/p/shark-stanley.html and www.facebook.com/SharkStanley (Stanley en Espanol aqui http://www.earthraceconservation.org/tibur%C3%B3n-stanley).
Shark Stanley is traveling around the world with his mates, Manta Reina, Pierre le Porbeagle and Waqi Whitetip, to find friends who will support shark and manta ray protections at the upcoming Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) meeting which starts on 3 March 2013.
At the last CITES meeting, eight species of shark were proposed for increased protection. Thanks to two of the usual suspects, Japan and China, not one species got the vote. So it's more crucial than ever for the scalloped, great and smooth hammerheads, porbeagles and oceanic whitetip sharks, and for reef and giant oceanic manta rays, that the vote goes through this year.
All you have to do is take a photograph of yourself with the Stanley and friends cut outs you can download below. All the art was created by Dan Yagmin Jr - talented guy! Send the photos to firstname.lastname@example.org captioned with your country and name, We'll send them on to your country's CITES representatives and forward them to Shark Defenders.
If you're up for it, take the cutouts to parties, into schools or anywhere you're meeting friends. Take them with you if you're holidaying in any of the places in the list of CITES member countries (below), or take 'em with you when you go shopping - anywhere you might find other people willing to have their photo taken. Don't forget to make a note of all the names and where the photos were taken.
Please hurry - we've only got until March 16 to find friends in every one of the 176 CITES member countries.
There are a few countries that we still need photos for so dig deep into your contact books and encourage your friends in far flung places to collect between 10-20 photos with Shark Stanley, Manta Reina, Pierre and Waqi...you'll find a list of the most recent 'target' countries here http://www.sharkdefenders.com/2013/02/animaniacs-nations-of-world.html.
We need a few more from these places too to make up the 10-20 photos needed for each CITES member representative: Afghanistan Algeria Antigua and Barbua Austria Bahamas Bahrain Belize Bhutan Bulgaria Cambodia Cape Verde Chile Colombia Congo Cook Islands Croatia Czech Republic Denmark Ecuador Estonia Finland French Polynesia FSM Georgia Ghana Guatemala Hungary India Iran Ireland Israel Japan Kazakstan Kenya Luxembourg Marshall Islands Monaco Morocco Mozambique Nepal Netherlands Nigeria NMI Norway Pakistan Palau Poland Portugal Qatar Romania Russia Saudi Arabia (Dubai) Senegal Spain Sri Lanka Sudan Switzerland Syria Tanzania Thailand Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Uganda Uruguay US Virgin Islands Uzbekistan Venezuela Vietnam Wales Zimbabwe.
If you'd like to know more about why some of these species need your help, check out these blogs:
We'd like to give a big shout out to all the Shark Defenders for launching this amazing campaign. Well done Alyssa Sablan, Angelo Villagomez, Carlotta Leon Guerrero, Kelly Brown, Leah Meth, Onon Bayasgalan, and Rob Stewart. And to our own Gina Bryant, who took Stanley to Fiji when she visited schools with Global Classrooms months ago - way ahead of us Gina!
An important international petition on Avaaz.org is also calling for CITES member countries to vote in support of listing manta rays for protection during the next meeting. Thanks to Shark Savers working with www.mantatrust.org and www.mantarayofhope.com, this important petition is now available in six languages. Find your language and sign here: http://www.sharksavers.org/en/blogs-news/shark-savers-blog/international....
Here's a handy list of all the CITES member countries. We're not even sure where some of these places are (oops!) but if you live in one of them, or have friends that do, please do it for Stanley and his friends and share the link to this page! Shark Defenders reckon Africa, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe are going to be the toughest - we've been around the world once before of course but we don't need a boat for this so let's show everyone how far we can reach out...we'll keep posting updates on what countries Stanley still has to find friends in on our facebook pages so keep checking back!
