MARINE ACTIVISTS IN US ARBITRATION TODAY OVER $1/2 MILLION OWED ON DOOMED ANTI-WHALING SHIP, ‘ADY GIL’

The long awaited case brought by marine activist, Pete Bethune, against the Sea Shepherd organisation (SSCS) and its founder, Paul Watson, begins arbitration today (Monday 30 July) in Annapolis, Maryland, USA.

Bethune has instigated the arbitration case to force SSCS to pay up the $1/2 million it owes him for the initial purchase of his boat, the Ady Gil. The boat was rammed by a Japanese whaler while taking part in a Sea Shepherd campaign in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in 2010.

Earthrace UK launches campaign to discourage British holiday makers from paying to see captive whales and dolphins this summer

With the terrible weather that Britons have been experiencing this summer, it’s no wonder that people are leaving in their hundreds and thousands for sun, sea and sand holidays abroad.

Marine conservation organisation, Earthrace UK, believes this is the right time to remind people not to pay to visit dolphin or whale shows, or swim with…programmes whilst abroad.

Today (Friday 8 June) is World Oceans Day, an annual event conceived by the Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network, both of which have supporting partners that include aquariums and marine parks that profit from entertainment using captive whales and dolphins.

NEW BOAT GIVES PETE HIS SEALEGS – SIGHTS SET ON ILLEGAL FISHING IN AFRICA

On Friday 20 April, Pete Bethune launched the new Earthrace vessel at Westhaven Marina in New Zealand. He and his crew have their sights set on tackling illegal fishing off the African coast, starting this summer.

The new craft, which can travel on both land and sea, is named ‘Sealegs’ after the New Zealand-based company of the same name that has developed the vessel for Earthrace. Sealegs is the world’s largest manufacturer of amphibious boats.

Japanese whaling has come under the spotlight in recent times more than ever before, and it seems the effect on may be to see it cease to function.

There has been mounting speculation that the Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR), the organisation that carries out lethal whaling research programmes on behalf of Japan, is facing financial ruin if they don’t get a massive government bailout very quickly.
